Kimberly

Kim was diagnosed with AML Leukemia on July 22, 2009, just after she finished high school. She'd been feeling well, just showing a few bruises when she went to Primary Childrens Medical Center for a heart surgery to fix a relatively minor condition she's had since she was born. A blood test before the surgery showed that her blood had been completely taken over by the cancer. They admitted her that day and began treatment right away. She went through five long rounds of chemotherapy, doing relatively well, with the exception of one infection that led to a very scary stay in the Pediatric ICU. She spent almost all of that time in the hospital, with just a few breaks to go home. By the end of March 2010 she was allowed to go home for good- officially in remission! She was so excited to finally go to USU Fall semester, and got strait A's in all of her classes! Psychology, Humanities, Family Finance and ANATOMY. Not a week after finals, at a regular check up at PCMC, her blood tests showed that her cancer was back. And thus began round two- Kim's goal was to make it to a bone marrow transplant. We had found a donor, so all that was left was to get her in remission once more. After three rounds of chemotherapy, her body was no longer strong enough to keep fighting, no matter that her spirit was. She will always be with us. 7:48 pm, March 31, 2011

Kimberly Nelson passed away Thursday, March 31st, at the Primary Children’s Medical Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, due to complications in a long and brave battle against Leukemia.

Our beloved Kimberly is the Jewel of our hearts. She was born May 30th, 1991, to her parents, David and Julie Nelson, and her eagerly awaiting older siblings, Emily and Michael, of Logan, Utah.

Despite health conditions that may have held her back, Kim has always been full of life, energy, an unbeatable determination to accomplish whatever goal she set for herself, and an undying love for everyone in her life. Her positive attitude has always lifted those around her, and her desire to make others laugh, even at her own expense, never ended.

Kim has always been a tremendous example to those around her. She inspires others to strive to be better, and her desire in life has been to help them along the way. Her unshakable testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ is undeniable to anyone who knows her. She doesn’t just believe, her entire life has been proof of her belief. The shining light within her has made the world a brighter place.

Kimberly comes from an incredible family and legacy. Her parents, sister, and brother, Grandparents Keith E. (deceased) and Mary Beth Nelson, of Logan, Utah, and Joseph D. (Deceased) and Loleta Marie Tanner of Lyman, Wyoming, Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, Best Friends, and countless other loved ones’ lives were brightened for having known Kim.

The funeral in her honor will be held on Saturday, the 9th of April, at noon, with a viewing from 10:30 to 11:30 that morning, at the Logan 15th Ward building, 125 West 600 North in Logan, Utah. A viewing will be held Friday evening, the 8th of April, from 6:00 until 8:00, at the Nelson Funeral Home, 150 East 400 North, Logan, Utah.

  1. What a beautiful tribute to such an amazing young woman. We have followed this blog and faithfully read every post. We have mourned the hard times and sobbed the night she passed away. Even though we have never met Kim or the rest of your family, we feel like we know you. We probably crossed paths in ICS when we finished our 2 year olds AML treatments the end of December. We are also from Logan. We hope that you can find peace and healing as you continue this earthly life without Kim. Thank you for your faith and your example and especially for sharing Kim's experiences with us.

  2. Dear Kim,

You have been in my thoughts for ever since I first visited your blog. This week I had planned to send you an email and tell you about my family.

My heart sank when I found out that I had missed my chance and that you were called home earlier than everyone had hoped.

We have been in your parents ward for almost a year. Your mother has a glow that cannot be ignored. What a loving and strong mother you have!

Kim your strength and smile will forever be remembered.

Please smile down upon us in your own way now and again.

We love you and are happy that you can be free from pain. We miss you and love you.

    Love,
Kory, Anya, Payton, and baby Wilson

  3. Dear Kim and family,
You have been in my heart since I first heard about the diagnosis, and though I never knew you very well, I have had many tender feelings for you and your family. What an amazing battle you fought. You must have gotten your strength from your parents, they have always looked so collected and strong throughout this whole struggle.
The pain of your loss your family must be feeling now is probably indescribable, and I'm sure I cannot understand it yet. But the comfort of the Gospel, and the end of your pain and suffering I know is also great. The testimony of your parents is certainly unshakable, as I have heard it expressed, and the reunion with each other one day will be blissful!

    Love,
    Anna Hunter

  4. Dear Kim,
I am so very sorry to hear of your passing, as is my husband Jesse. Your family and yourself are part of our ward. It is unfortunate that we never had the chance to get to know you or meet you but we have heard that you fought an amazing battle and never gave up! We are glad to know you don't have to suffer or endure anymore pain and we know without a doubt that you are in a better and happier place. Your family's love for you and their faith is beyond explanation and that is simply amazing. I wish I would have had an opportunity to meet you because I know from this blog what an amazing, and spiritually faithful and strong girl you are. I also know that thanks to the gospel and the faith in Heavenly Father and The Savior that when the time comes we will all meet you in Heaven and I know you will have a smile on your face. Thank You Kim for showing us all how if you keep the faith and know it is everlasting that nothing can keep us from running all the way to the end and to keep fighting and to stay positive and happy. My Husband Jesse and myself send our love and also many condolences to your family at this time. Enjoy Heaven and Live In Peace And Happiness.
    Sincerely,
    Sofia and Jesse Wood

  6. I'm so sad to hear about Kim's passing. It was my privilege to be her anatomy teacher last fall. She was so fun, smart, and optimistic. . . I can't help but feel sad for Kim and for her family. I appreciated the messages Kim exchanged over Facebook during her therapy. I share your faith that Kim is happy in heaven, and pain free at last. You are in my thoughts and prayers. ~Kevin Young

  9. My husband and I were previously in your ward. (Bryan and Carrie Bostrom) We moved a few months ago but I have occasionally checked the blog for updates. As I have followed Kim's journey I have always admired her courage. There is no doubt how beautiful she is but she you can also see the bravery and strength that she had to fight for so long.

I admired Kim and your family as I was pregnant a few months ago and was given a fatal diagnosis for our unborn baby. I was heartbroken but found courage after learning about Kim and how she would "keep running" no matter what the circumstance. We had our baby 3 weeks ago today and then she returned to Heaven 2 weeks ago today. We knew that she would not live long but were so grateful for the 7 miraculous days we had with her.

You are a beautiful family. Emily- what courage you had to keep this blog for so long. You have done an amazing job.

I have been praying for your family as you are now dealing with life without your angel. I heard the following Irish Funeral Prayer a few months ago and it has given me some strength as I have been grieving. I hope it can provide you some comfort.

    Longing for One More Day

When we lose someone we love,
it seems that time stands still.
What moves through us is a silence…
    a quiet sadness… A longing for one more day…
one more word… one more touch…
We may not understand why you left this earth so soon,
or why you left before we were ready to say good-bye,
    but little by little,
we begin to remember not just that you died,
    but that you lived.
And that your life gave us memories too beautiful to forget.
We will see you again some day,
in a heavenly place where there is no parting.
A place where there are no words that mean good-bye.

  11. "will you be my friend" were the first words kimmy and i ever spoke to each other(in kindgergarden).
Though we lost touch over the years I never forgot her and the times we shared.
It broke my heart to hear such an amazing person was fighting this battle and tore it in two when I heard she had passed.
Like Emily said at the funeral. Kim will keep guiding us and helping us to follow the right path.
My condolences go out to all family and friends.
Kim was certainly a special being.
Keep running Kim. I know I will.

    Love, a past friend.
